    End of Summer Camping

I went river camping as summer is just about over wanted to get one more trip in
Thought I would share some photos with you all

The weather was fairly warm and humid, decent paddling but miserable sleeping weather.
Camped on a small island with plenty dry driftwood firewood.

Wanted to try this 1968 Coleman 502 stove. I was given this stove filled with gas from circa 1981. and it still worked fine.
Amazing the fuel did not break down. Great piece of gear for boat or truck camping.

Tried a MRE Beef Teriyaki with MRE white rice. Both cooked boil in pouch
    IMG_1390 (1024x768) (800x600).jpg
They had the flavor of Canned LA CHOY or cheap frozen TV dinner Chinese food.
    IMG_1396 (1024x768) (800x600).jpg
In retrospect I should have stuck withBeef stew or Chili
Used a WW 1 mess kit (Meat Can) found out the handle can cause it to tip over as it shallow in comparison to the WW 2 version.
It packs great, the modern version is a little better to eat with.

Breakfast was far more conventional, SPAM and instant grits
    IMG_1399 (1024x768) (800x600).jpg
Anyway the foliage is still green but there are a few tree just beginning to turn yellow
    IMG_1386 (1024x768) (800x600).jpg
Water clear and flowing well since we had a wet summer.
    IMG_1385 (1024x768) (800x600).jpg
Next stop for me is the back bays and tall reeds of Virginia tidewater.

We thought about it for a long time, "Endeavor to persevere." And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union

Is it a pretty desolate river for camping or near towns? I'm hoping to take one of my wife's friends boy backpacking this weekend. She's a single mom so I try to bring him into some outdoor experiences. I take him shooting quite often and camping a few times but backpacking he hasn't done and would be a great experience.

I don't have aNY neat little stoves, usually just cook by the fire or dig a hole and move some coals into for cooking with my yugo mess kit. I've copied your idea of spam or tuna in a pouch, pretty handy. Maybe I'll have to try grits sometime. That would be a good change of pace for a northern boy like me. Never had them before.

The river looks pretty calm. Is there much current?
