Lyman peep sights on my 1895 Chilean Mauser.

So, I purchased an 1895 Chilean Mauser a couple of months ago for a really good price. I think I got it cheap because it has Lyman front sights and is drilled and tapped for Lyman rear sights. Does not really bother me at all because I have always wanted to try out an old Mauser with peep sights anyways.

I found a set of Lyman 57SME peep sights that will fit it on E-Bay. As you can see, it has a quick detach button for use of original iron sights if needed. Going to mount it up here in a minute.

Got the base mounted up with a little bit of blue Loctite on the bolt threads. The bolt holes lined up, thank goodness! It fits really nice.

Have it all mounted up with the target windage/elevation knobs I got from Brownell's. Using the original rear sights and the Lyman front sights, it was shooting about a foot low at 25 yards. I had to flip up the rear sights up and set them to 500 yards to be on target at 25 yards! I bench set the new rear peeps by co-witnessing them with the stock rear sights set to 500 yards, it should be close.

I would never drill a surplus receiver for aftermarket sights but this one already was. I actually kind of like the way it looks.

Thanks for sharing. I tend to believe not all the modifications we see were done post military. Military have made special need items with commercial products
forever. In the old days our own officers often bought/ordered their own guns and no doubt had them setup the way they wished. Anyway, nice project putting it
back together. Hope it is a good shooter for you.

It looks good to me. My old peepers see better through a peep sight anyway. Let us know how it works out at the range.

Thanks. I like projects like this, getting all the parts together and installing everything. It's fun.

She was a pretty good shooter before with the rear leaf sight, just shooting way low until I adjusted it up. This is the 5 shot group I did with it. Had one flier of course. Lol

My aging eyes see much better through peep sights as well, especially with the little tiny rear notch they put on these old Mausers. I'll post up a range report next time I make it out with it. Might be awhile, it's getting really cold here. Was 22 with an 8 wind chill this morning.

Actually I put a lyman onto my Ishy 2A earlier. It's an enjoyable shooter now! I did opt for the large disk sight.

Nice! Those look good on there. You like the large disk peep?
