It's always a good day when the .30 Carbine gets to the range. Those new powder loads shot ok. No signs of overpressure on the primers. There was room for more powder in the case so the next batch will go up a grain to 13. The 2 new mags ran fine. Had 1 FTF that I'm sure was worn out brass related. Circled the first 5 rounds, and shot the rest of the mag at the other target. This was at 50yd off the bench bags.

Then I shot a mag full of the pop can loads to compare POI.

Then I shot the other mag of SW 110FMJ's with the plastic bipod to compare POI. Like every other gun I've tried with it the POI was higher, in this case around 4". It also straightened the windage to mostly center.

Then I finished the day with the 30 rds. left in the drum of the MAK90, off the bipod. Again around 4" high.

I stopped at the sport store and picked up a can of Gunslick foaming bore cleaner and that pig Enfield is soaking with it now.

Got a gear review. Gunslick Pro foaming bore cleaner. 2 thumbs up. This stuff is finally cutting the crap out of the Enfield sewer pipe. While on layoff last week I used this twice a day. The mung in there was coming out like a layer cake. First 2 days it was all black carbon. 3rd day a patch came out blue with copper fouling. Then more black, and more blue on day 5. So I grabbed the gun, cleaning gear, and those 40 rd. of S&B factory loads and went to the range this morning. Shot 10 to get it hot, foamed the bore, and scrounged brass for 10 minutes. Gave it a good brushing and patching, and repeat 3 more times. The other Mark (guy who helped me with the M16 a month ago) was there to swap stories while waiting, and another old boy showed up with a .22 target rifle like this, but scoped.

Target on left is the first 10. See what happens on the first shot when you forget to swab out the wet bore lol! Threw it a bunch right. Target on right is the other 30. When I got done it was the first time I could see well defined grooves all the way out to the muzzle. Before this, the last 5" looked like a smoothbore musket lol! Progress is being made.

It has more to do with being cheap and stubborn than dedication lol! It will probably cost 3x what I paid for it to get a new barrel. I'm just trying to put that off for awhile.

So it was back to the range for more Enfield work this morning. Conditions were great. Totally overcast, 70, whisper of breeze from the left, empty range, and they just mowed lol!

    IMG_0930.jpg

The experiment today was upping the pop can loads to see if a little more bullet obtrusion in the grooves would help. I'll be damned if I didn't find 3 wins today! And the usual fail lol! Loaded those 40 S&B brass 20/20 with 7g. and 8g. of HP38, instead of the 5g. I usually load. Started with the 7g. and took 5 rounds to get on paper. That was with 600yd on the rear sight and it landed in the black, so I sent 5 more down, and they All hit black. Win #1. Win #2 was I tweaked the front sight for windage before I left, and took the tool with, but didn't need it. Those M16 sight in targets are perfect for the Enfield on the 50yd. line. Width is exact for the front sight. Line it up, then lift until the white line disappears for a 6 O'clock hold.

Those light loads didn't heat the barrel much so I sent the other 10 down before cleaning, but I still got a copious amount of black sludge evicted. Win #3.

    IMG_0932.jpg

This load should give Mark's '03 a run. The 8g. sure won't lol! Total fail. Hell, my shotgun will pattern better lol! Only 1g. difference, but at this level that's 14%.

I like to play around with loads like that to see what they will do. It clearly doesn't like the hotter load. Now I would have to drop back a little from the 7g load and see what something like 6.5 would do.
