    Remember that story too.

I think I would have dissected part of the tree and brought it along to and put the Rifle as it stood in the tree. Just a one dimensional slab of the side of the tree it was standing against. Neat story anyway.

Got to wander if he was killed by Wildlife, people or had a accident. Or just wandered off and lost it in the night maybe. Many possibility, but the pondering is probably more fun than if we knew. If we knew why it may turn out to be kinda boring, our imagination can probably come up with the best story.

Wonder why anyone would be in the middle of no where with an unloaded rifle.

Maybe he had two Firearms present and was under attack. The Winnie went empty and he set it up against the tree he was using for cover, and pulled out a sidearm, or another rifle. Then maybe he was forced from the cover of the Tree, and died elsewhere. And the attacker maybe being animal, never had a use for the Rifle. Or if Human. They just never discovered it at his initial cover spot. Probably exactly know it happened.

I often wandered just how old this tree was. What species and its growth patterns and years of life. The leaning on the tree for that many years has always made me somewhat suspicious of this whole story.
