Texas shooting and "gun control" comments

Watching the news about the latest Texas shooting. Apparently, the guy started shooting after a cop tried to pull him over for a traffic violation.

One of the "Action Cam - On Scene" reporters, wearing his "concerned face" commented "I find it very disturbing that someone can drive around Texas with a gun in his car." Really? In Texas?

Even if carrying a loaded rifle in his car was illegal as it is here in Pennsylvania, that probably wouldn't have deterred the guy. After all, it is also illegal to shoot at the police and to shoot at people who aren't trying to do you harm.

Criminals have a tendency to break the law, which is why new laws like this are as effective as gun free zones in deterring mentally ill criminals. Just like Chicago has more gun laws than most anywhere in the US yet has the most gun violence because criminals do not adhere to those laws.

We do not need more laws. We need equal enforcement of existing laws.

We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other. - John Adams, 2nd U.S. President -

A good test for causation is to eliminate factors, one at a time, to determine whether the event would have occurred. Take away the rifle, and this guy would still have caused mayhem and likely injury or death. Take the guy away, and the rifle would still be stashed in the parked truck, unfired.

Excellent column by one of my favorites:
    https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/...rime-proposal/

One of the most amusing parts to me is the quote from a NYT article that describes Midland-Odessa as "rural". One wonders if that NYT reporter simply looked out the window as they flew over and called it good. From the air it might look rural, on the ground it doesn't, at least not if you've seen actual rural areas (like where I live )

I see they are reporting the shooter was banned from buying guns. He did try to buy one thru dealer, but failed the background check. so no sale. He latter got around the
background check by making a private purchase.

Politicians are using this shooting to push the universal background check bill (that the Democrats already voted on in the House) thru Senate. My best guess is Trump and Senate will likely
go along with it. They were already receiving a lot of pressure to do so and this shooting making it a pretty sure deal.

I have read the bill. Basically bans all private guns transfers without background check. Family members would be exempt.

BTW not sure what it would mean for us C&R holders, if we will still be able to receive a C&R firearm directly on our 03 FFL?

Lot of talk on a federal red flag bill (law), but lot more legally complicated than the background check bill that can quickly be passed. A red flag law may happen, but not quickly.

All the Dem candidates are wanting a new "assault weapon/high cap gun ban. Top 3 (Biden, Warren, Sanders), are so far shying away from mandatory turn-in/buy back as part of the
ban, most of the others are demanding it.
