Public service announcement. Dont do this.

Dont ever get complacent with firearms safety. I was in the military. Have taken & taught firearms classes. Have built more guns than I can remember. I'm not some chump kids running around thinking I'm all gangster waving a 9 like some kind of moron.

I know a thing or two about safety. Never had even a close call. Until I got complacent on 03 July 2020.

Didnt do a basic safety check. Simple little thing like making sure the safety was engaged. Just picked up a Kalashnikov to check the chamber prior to cleaning. Safety was on & I dropped the rifle. Either it's got a stupid light trigger or I tried to catch it, but it went bang.

Not to worry y'all, I broke the bullets fall with my left knee

Fortunately, God loves me. As of now, there no major damage. At least not the hard to fix stuff. Pretty sure theres some tendon / ligament damage & nerve damage. Nothing obvious that the ER trauma people noticed. Got a appointment with a specialist on Monday. But it's still a butt ton of pain & well, more pain.

So there ya go. Do not get complacent with your safety.

Holy cow! I'm glad it wasn't worse.
In those moments where you're not quite sure if the undead are really dead, dead, don't get all stingy with your bullets.

Thankfully ya got lucky if it missed bone, they'll be able to fix the ligaments but it's gonna be a PITA the rest of your life. I know exactly what you mean, some of us that have handled firearms the majority of our lives get a bit complacent at times. I had a negligent discharge once out in the yard and that was enough to make me get right in the head. Now before it even comes out of the case I force myself to sit down and think through the rules of firearm safety. It gets me into a safe mindset from the get go.

Makes me glad I carry a gunshot (primarily) first aid kit to the range with me. Hope you heal up with nothing more than a scar & bad memory.
We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other. - John Adams, 2nd U.S. President -

It's not a whole lot of fun. I highly recommend not doing this.
The lo order was definitely watching over me, since this could have been so much worse, so very easily. A very painful lesson in humility for me. I'm not good at asking for help from anyone for anything. Now I can barely hobble myself to the bathroom. Can't even get my own pants on by myself.

    It sucks.

Hopefully talking about this where I can on various gun forums helps someone else avoid making my mistake.

God speed with your recovery, and I think Silvera offered a great idea. You are a very lucky man.
