Civil War cannonballs discovered at former arsenal site in Lawrenceville
PITTSBURGH — A cache of Civil War cannonballs were discovered at the former Allegheny Arsenal site in Lawrenceville.
Public Safety officials said around noon on July 2, a construction crew struck something solid while working on a new condominium development on 39th Street

The excavator had prior experience and called the bomb squad when he recognized they were cannonballs.

The Pittsburgh Police Bomb Squad recently recovered a cache of Civil War era cannonballs from the former Allegheny Arsenal site.
The cannonballs are property of the US Army.

This is the same employee who helped unearth 715 cannonballs in March of 2017, not far from where these ones were found, officials said.
Public Safety said the cannonballs are the property of the United States Army. They said the ordnances are live and sensitive to certain conditions, so the bomb squad will handle the cannonballs in coordination with the Army.
