Great photo, he looks like a WW 2 troop with a 1950s rifle.
I have that shelter half he is wearing, with a set with poles. Four of them make a good sized tent. It is Austrian marked 1959. solid poles huge thick tent pegs.
When the cold war ended, the war surplus gods smiled on Norton. There was a flood of West German, Dutch, Belgian mess kits, tents bags, stoves and of course rifles.
Good thing that Cold War ending
