    Springfield XD or S&W M&P?

Im looking at picking up a new carry piece and was looking at the compact models of both the XD and M&P in .40. So which one would you all reccomend?

when i went up to get a handgun for my ccw,the xd and m&p were my top choices.i ask to look at the xd compact and the m&p 40.as soon as i ask for the m&p 40 the clerk told me it was a much "nicer" firearm than the xd.the prices were close but with the promotion at the time and the advice of the clerk i took the m&p 40.i bought it in the concealed carry pack, gun, holster, 3 mags, mag pouch, and the promo was $50 mail in rebate and 2 extra mags.

i love my m&p 40 and i am glad i coose it over the xd.the m&p felt better in my hand and the saftey is on the trigger.it is very accurate with the cheap ammo i have been using for target practice so i can only assume the ranger loads i have for carry use are just as good.

    hope this helps.

also if you are going to use it for concealed carry, smith and wesson offer a very nice 3 slot leather holster through their website for it.made by desantis with the smith and wesson and m&p logos stamped in the leather.

I am a Smith fan. I own 5 S&W autos and 8 revolvers. The only reason I am considering an XD is that my SO is a south paw and she likes the mag release on the XD better than the M&P. I have many co-workers that have XD's. They all like them but some had trouble initially w/reliability. The "Tactical" version had feeding problems when first introduced. I presume that has been worked out.

My dad has three XD's. One regular, one compact, and one tactical. Loves all of them and carry's the compact. My brother just got the new XD-M and they both swear by it now.

    As a fellow southpaw...

anyone can adapt to lefty use, if the pistol is not too big or you're hands are big enuf. I have no probs working the righty controls (mag release, slide stop, decock) on my Ruger or Sig autos.

Also, use of the Weaver stance means the supporting hand is right there to operate any cotrols the shooting hand won't, including that hammer.

they're both fine choices imho. pick them both up next time you're in a gun store and see which one feels the best in your hand.

I have three XD's now .40SC (daily carry), .40 Tactical (IPSC gun), and 9mm Service (plinker) and they all are flawless and very accurate. A friend has the M&P and it's a great pistol as well, but to each their own. Shoot them both and decide for yourself. Either way you won't go wrong.

you live in ky as well right. if you go to knob creek(if it isn't to far away) they have many used guns that you acn rent or buy if you like 'em good enough. i just rented a 1911 to see if i liked the feel, is if i wasnt going to, and now i'm contemplating, if i want it, a mauser, enfield, or a spring field.
